Sitting in the heat, wrapped in salt air, it was impossible not to notice how easily people soften around warmth — conversations loosen, shoulders drop, and something ancient and sensible clicks back into place.

Every year when our family returns to England, the first booking we make is for a seaside sauna with Nomadic Sauna on the Sussex coast. We’ve been deeply inspired by the mobile sauna culture there, and elsewhere around the world — saunas parked close to water, heat treated as ritual rather than indulgence, and strangers becoming briefly, comfortably familiar.

Kinship Sauna was built in the thick of early parenthood, when rest felt elusive and resilience felt essential. Between naps and late nights, we began shaping the thing we were craving most: a quiet, welcoming place to sweat, decompress, fend off the latest round of childhood bugs, and reconnect — with ourselves and with each other.

What emerged wasn’t just a sauna, but something made slowly, and together.

The wood was gathered from salvaged trees found along the side of the road, milled by us, and brought to life with the help of many hands — friends, family, and community members who quite literally helped shape the space. You can feel it when you step inside: this is not a manufactured experience, but one that carries the marks of where it came from, and who it was built alongside.

Both of us have deep roots here — Sashwa having grown up in this community, and Kaelyn having found her way here as a teen — and Kinship Sauna is, at its heart, an offering back to the people and places that have shaped us.
